With a New Year comes new possibilities, the opportunity to reflect, to set new goals and enact positive change. There are so many pieces of advice floating around this time of year - new fads, new diets, new workout regimes; it can all be overwhelming. Here in Ontario, a slew of new restrictions have just been introduced and many of us return to work-from-home, school-from-home, even fitness-from-home. We can’t always control external factors, but there are some positive changes that we can make in the homes that hold us and our families. Since we are in the business of home, we thought we would offer our top 5 tips for keeping your home happy and healthy throughout the year.
Maximize natural light. With shorter days, rooms can feel gloomy and dark. Pull back the window treatments, add a variety of light sources, including overheads, lamps, even candlelight. Being able to adjust lighting allows your home to be as bright or cozy as you need.
Bring some of the outdoors in. Adding some greenery makes us happier, relaxed and more productive. Even small plants can make a huge impact when it comes to reducing air pollution and creating healthier indoor spaces. Consider adding an English Ivy, Aloe Vera or a Palm. If you lack the proverbial green-thumb, considering snipping some evergreen branches from the yard and placing them in a vase.
Embrace organization. If renovations or home improvements are not on the books for you this year, decluttering and organizing your home is a great way to freshen your space. You don’t have to be Marie Kondo to get your home in order. Set aside manageable allotments of time to tackle tasks. Take stock of what you value, and don't be afraid to donate and purge.
Consider a new colour scheme. Our mood and productivity is highly affected by the colours around us. Painting your home is a quick and cost-effective way to brighten your space and win a whole new perspective.
Think sustainable. As climate change and shrinking resources become an ever-present topic of worldwide conversation, it can feel overwhelming. But small changes that we make in our lifestyle and home can make an important contribution towards protecting the environment. Consider unplugging devices that are not in use. Replace bulbs with energy-saving or LED bulbs. Use cold water for laundry. Put on a couple cozy layers before turning up the heat. Winter is the season where we tend to spend more time at home. Whatever changes you choose to implement this year, keep them achievable and sustainable, not overwhelming. Stay focused on what you value and what adds value. And of course, if a new home is your resolution this year - we can help with that too!

Looking for a change of pace? A holiday home can provide you with a space separate from your primary residence where you can relax and recharge. It’s also a great investment for those who work remotely. As remote working expands the radius between our private and working lives, many buyers interested in vacation properties are looking at destinations far from their current homes. For those in colder climates, this may mean buying a vacation property in a tropical location. Urban dwellers may be drawn to homes with more space, privacy, and seclusion. Some luxury buyers even look for properties unique to their interests, like skiing or golf. Regardless of the reason behind purchasing a holiday or second home, they are most often chosen for their unique amenities and location.

Design Trends: Designing the Ultimate Chef's Kitchen |
EV Blog
With people spending more time at home there has been an increase in home renovation projects across the Americas. In fact, home remodelling searches more than doubled in 2021, with kitchens remaining the most remodelled room.
As one of the most used rooms in the home, it’s not surprising that homeowners want to personalize their kitchens to better suit their needs, spending $12,000 USD on average. When remodelling the kitchen, culinary experts pay special attention to the oven, fridge, sinks, and cooking surfaces as these elements determine just how efficient a chef can be in their space. |

Getting out in the crisp, fresh air is a great way to take a break, increase motivation and combat the winter blues. Luckily, in Grey County we have unlimited access to nature, and the spectacular scenery of the Niagara Escarpment is a unique treasure. This month we recommend checking out Inglis Falls, one of the several waterfalls here in Grey Bruce. Whether by hike or snowshoe, solo or with friends, this local destination may just be more beautiful during the winter season than it is in sunshine! We’ll let you decide.
Be sure to check the website here for the best access, safety tips and tricks.

The purpose of business is to create socially, economically and environmentally sustainable communities. Being in the business of real estate allows us the privilege of daily interaction with our local communities and we recognize our moral duty to lend support where we can.
Engel & Völkers is globally recognized for its commitment to philanthropy. We as a group are proud to support the causes close to our hearts to help others live strong, happy and healthy lives. A portion of our income from all real estate sales goes directly to these wonderful organizations.
Special Olympics - a renown international organization providing training and support for children and adult athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Living Wish Foundation - an organization devoted to making the world a better place; helping terminally ill patients re-frame hope and realize their dreams.
Residential Hospice Grey Bruce - providing compassionate, patient-centred care to individuals with a life-limiting illness, empowering them to live well while dying.
Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation - raises funds for medical and diagnostic equipment and renovations; supports education and training for staff directly involved in patient care. James is proud to serve as a member of the Board.
Georgian Triangle Humane Society - a non-profit charity providing shelter for homeless animal friends and connecting them with caring families. |
We are proud of our work and the ability to give back directly to our local community! James was honoured to make Christmas donations to the two local causes which he consistently supports. The Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation received $3,000, while a donation was also made to the Residential Hospice Grey Bruce. James' running campaign for the Hospice totals $6,600. |
